Ride+Stride

Thanking everyone for their amazing support for Ride+Stride 2016, John Pickthorn, our Ride+Stride organiser, said: “Whether you cycled, walked, sponsored someone, or opened your church and provided welcome refreshments, you have been amazing. Thank you for all your hard work. You have helped to save beautiful and historic churches for everyone to enjoy.” Stay tuned for news of our next Ride+Stride on Saturday 9 September 2017.

When the Trust was founded in 1951, one of its aims was to assist in the maintenance of the fabric of our churches and chapels.  In the immediate post-war years there was a huge backlog of repairs resulting from the general neglect of buildings during the war years, as well as a significant amount of bomb damage. The minutes of the September 1952 meeting tell us that after a lively discussion it was agreed that small grants should be made as soon as possible, four of £25.  At the next meeting six churches were selected for a £25 grant:

  • High Laver, All Saints
  • Chadwell, St Mary
  • Middleton, All Saints
  • Hempstead, St Andrew
  • Strethall, St Mary the Virgin
  • Stebbing, St Mary the Virgin

Most grants are now in the range of £1,000 to £10,000. Annual lists of grants offered since 2006 can be found on this website, and are also included in our annual report.

In 2014 the Trust decided that, with effect from January 2015, grants should be made for improvements as well as repairs, although repairs remain our priority.
